New edition of The Pedestrian Pound

Living Streets, the walking charity, has published the third edition of The Pedestrian Pound.

This new version updates the evidence on how making it easy and pleasant to walk and wheel around town centres benefits the local economy. It also broadens the evidence base to look at the benefits for health, community and the environment.

The Pedestrian Pound Toolkit

A number of companion documents supplement The Pedestrian Pound – creating a toolkit of resources for policy-makers and practitioners. In particular, with evidence and case studies from across the UK, as well as country-specific annexes, this updated edition aims to share and inspire improvements for pedestrians in village, town and city centres in Scotland and Wales, as well as in England.

The toolkit includes:

The Smarter Choice Consultancy’s Role

For this project, The Smarter Choice Consultancy developed the typology and design menu. This will help practitioners to create projects which bring about multi-faceted improvements for pedestrians – addressing all of their needs to provide an easier, safer and more pleasant environment for walking and wheeling.

We were also responsible for holding research interviews and writing the suite of 12 inspirational case studies. These have been categorised by location, scale, local economy, type of measures implemented and impacts – so that readers can find examples which resonate with their own local context.

Event management and facilitation services for two stakeholder workshops held in Scotland and Wales were also within our remit. These helped to ensure the latest edition of The Pedestrian Pound is more reflective of experiences and opportunities across the UK.

This project was completed for Living Streets as a sub-contractor to Transport for Quality of Life, working in partnership with the University of the West of England’s Centre for Transport and Society, Wedderburn Transport Planning and Michael Frearson.
